Twitter scams are now being more and more popular and in-your-face. This morning I have had two emails this morning telling me that a user has sent me a private message. The message which they both sent me was "when did you make this video? its hilarious, cant stop laughing lol [URL]".
The URL leads to a fake twitter login page. This is an obvious attempt to obtain my username and password. It is a very old-style way to gain this information but works very well as you land on a very familiar page but may or may not notice the URL is not twitter.com.
To build accounts and send out direct messages is extremely easy! You just need to start creating accounts, add some RSS feeds generating tweets to make it look active, get a following by using TweetAdder and then another app (easily build in-house) to send out DMs. It is even pretty simple to get them personalize “Hi James, I want your account details like here”.
Be careful on what you are clicking on through twitter direct messages.
